Ford India to manufacture Engines locally for new models
Ford India, the Indian unit of Ford Motors Co. is planning big for the domestic market. The company is to build engines in India for the upcoming models from the company's stable which will get the official launch within a few years. The decision is based on the exponential growth marked by Indian auto market. The local manufacturing of these engines will help the company in grabbing a larger share of this lucrative market by keeping the cost of cars low.
Ford India Pvt. Is also planning to speed up the exports of its engines to Thailand, which is the major manufacturing unit for Southeast Asia. The decision will help the company in meeting the high demand in that region. The claims were made by Michael Boneham who is the President of Ford Motors.
The company's decision of increasing the engine portfolio of engines will help the company in tapping a greater market along with increased exports and ultimately getting counted among the top players of market. In the month of August, the company claimed to bring as many as eight new models in different passenger vehicle segments for the Indian Auto market by year 2015. this will help the company stand strong in front of the market leaders like Maruti Suzuki (India) Ltd. And also show tough time to the global competitors, like General Motors Co., Hyundai Motor Co. And Volkswagen AG.
As per the statements made by Mr. Boneham, India makes a lucrative destination for manufacturing low-displacement, fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engines to meet the local needs and other region's demand like Asia-Pacific and Africa.
In Indian the company's engine manufacturing plant is located in the southern Tamil Nadu state which has a total capacity of 250,000 units a year. Among the exports portfolio, company has 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter gasoline engines which are shipped to Thailand and Africa.
Mr. Boneham claimed that the plant can produce six types of engines, which includes the one used in Ford Figo and Ford Fiesta. The engine used in Ford Endeavour is imported. The manufacturing unit is running at 70% capacity. The company officials claimed that the industry will grow at larger scale and thus the manufacturing of engines at local level will help them in capturing better market share.
