    Chevrolet Spark Electric to be launched by end of 2010

    Chevrolet Spark Electric, which was showcased at Delhi auto expo in January, is all set to enter in the Indian market as General Motors is in the final stage of production of this model. Company will launch India's first four-door electric passenger car by the end of this year, a top company executive said today.

    Chevrolet Spark Electric, which was showcased at Delhi auto expo in January, is all set to enter in the Indian market as General Motors is in the final stage of production of this model. Company will launch India's first four-door electric passenger car by the end of this year, a top company executive said today.

    General Motors India has entered into a tie-up with Reva Electric Car Company to manufacture the E-Spark, said the auto major's Director and Vice-President, P Balendran. Chevrolet e-Spark is basically an electric version of GM's famous small car in India, Chevrolet Spark and REVA would provide the battery technology for the E-Spark.

    At the ceremony of rolling-out 1,00,000th Chevrolet Spark, at company's Halol plant near Vadodara, Mr Balendran said that, this path-breaking initiative is in line with GM India's commitment to introduce environment-friendly mobility solutions in the country. GM Entered into an agreement with Bangalore-based Reva in September, 2009, for collaboration in the development of electric vehicles for the India market.

    GM India has developed base of its local suppliers and awarded contracts to them for components worth $500 million for the supply of Chverolet Spark Electric. The company is to source components worth USD one billion in the next two years for its overseas operations, a company official said.

    According to Vijay Kalra, General Motors India Vice-President, Despite production of 2,40,000 cars every year, the company is finding it difficult to meet demand.
