6 Things We Know About The Upcoming Toyota Innova Facelift

What’s going to be different and what’s not in the new Innova?

The Toyota Innova Crysta was launched in its current avatar in 2016 and it has since received a few minor updates. But it is due its first major facelift which arrives in early December after its debut in the Indonesian market. Here’s what we can expect from the facelifted Innova:

Minor cosmetic tweaks to the exterior

Toyota hasn’t yet showcased the new Innova in India but it has already been revealed in Indonesia. The design update to the Toyota MPV seems to be a literal version of a facelift as the biggest changes have been made to the Innova’s front end. It gets a new grille, sportier front bumper and multi-array LED headlamps. No further design changes can be seen on the facelifted Innova apart from the alloy wheel design which is also market dependent.

Minimal updates to the interior

The updates for the interior of the new Innova Crysta are more subtle than the exterior update. While the dashboard layout seems unchanged, the central display is a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen unit which is expected to get Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and probably connected car tech too. Another visible change is mild redesign of the dials in the driver’s instrument cluster. Indonesia gets the all-black theme but we’re expected to continue getting a lighter shade of upholstery which makes the cabin feel more airy.

Only a couple of new features

The Innova Crysta is a fairly well-equipped model, if not as tech-loaded as cars from rival carmakers. For the facelift, the only feature update apart from the larger touchscreen infotainment system is the air purifier unit integrated into the climate control. The Toyota MPV already comes with comforts like cruise control, powered driver’s seat, 7 airbags and rear AC vents.

No change in engine options

Toyota is expected to continue with the same engines on the facelifted Innova Crysta as the current model, which gets the choice of a 2.7-litre petrol and a 2.4-litre diesel. The petrol engine makes 166PS and 245Nm while the diesel unit produces 150PS and 343Nm. Both engines are offered with the choice of a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The diesel-automatic also sees its peak torque rise to 360Nm.

Top Class Safety Rating

The ASEAN NCAP recently crash tested the Indonesia-spec Innova facelift which passed with flying colours. While it’s not a one glove fits all scenario, it's only natural to expect a similar performance from the India-spec model. That said, the final verdict on the safety can only be delivered once the India-spec model is crash tested.

Expected prices

The facelifted Toyota Innova Crysta is expected to attract a premium of around Rs 50,000 over the current model which is priced between Rs 15.66 lakh and Rs 23.63 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will continue to be positioned between the Mahindra Marazzo and Kia Carnival in the MPV space with some rivalry from 7-seater SUVs like the MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Tata Gravitas and BS6 Hexa.
