2020 Honda City vs Hyundai Verna Facelift - Side By Side

On one hand, the new Honda City has seen quite an evolutionary change in line with its family genes. On the other hand, the 2020 Hyundai Verna despite being just a facelift, not a generation change like the City, seems to look drastically different than its predecessor. So which of these 3-box cars would look better in your garage? We put the Thai-spec City against the China-spec Verna in this side by side picture comparison. Both the sedans are expected to go on sale by mid-2020.

Front: There’s no doubt the City looks mellow in front of the edgy Verna design. Top variants of both the City and the Verna get LED headlamps and DRLs. The grille in the Verna is easily more prominent and flashy in comparison to the City’s thick signature Honda chrome grille. Similarly, the Verna’s front bumper design is a lot sharper than the City’s.

Side: The side profile of the new-generation City isn’t very different from the outgoing model, and that’s a good thing. There’s no change to Verna’s roofline as it is a mere facelift. New 16-inch machine-finished alloy wheels on the City look striking but not as much as the Verna’s, which are similar to the next-gen Hyundai Creta.

Rear: Move behind and the designs couldn’t be more different. The City has softly laid lines and rectangular wrap-around LED tail lamps whereas the Verna gets a sportier, connected illumination unit for the tail section. The cuts and creases in Verna’s bumper are also sharper than the City with the only similarity being those integrated vertical reflectors.

Interior: Both the sedans follow a dual-tone paint scheme and an 8-inch touchscreen takes center stage on the dashboard. Both cars get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Thai-spec Honda City retains an analogue instrument cluster but Indian buyers could get a digital instrument cluster from the next-gen Jazz. Hyundai will also be equipping the Verna with a new digital unit. Both the sedans get connected technology for remote eSIM-based operations.

Engine: The City gets a new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that delivers 122PS, 173Nm and comes mated to a CVT automatic transmission. We will be making do with the existing 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. A hybrid unit from the new-gen Jazz, however, could make its way to our shores by 2021. As for the Verna, Hyundai will be utilising the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre petrol and diesel powertrains of the Kia Seltos when it comes to India.
