The Xcent facelift gets more appealing front and rear profile, a new engine and a new variant, the E+

The 2017 Hyundai Xcent facelift has finally been launched at Rs 5.38 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). With its first ever update, the Xcent looks quite different, especially from the front. You cannot ignore the large, single-frame cascading grille with chrome lining at the front in the Xcent facelift. Unlike its predecessor, one can now easily differentiate the Grand i10 facelift (on which it is based) and the new Xcent, as the former continues to get a pair of grilles at the front. But is the change limited only to the front fascia? Let’s dig deeper to know more.

Design

The most noticeable change in design that instantly catches your attention is the big single-frame grille. Instead of the black slats and thin chrome lining on the grille, the facelift now gets five prominent chrome slats with thick chrome garnishing all around. Just like its refreshed hatchback sibling, the Xcent facelift gets daytime running LEDs, placed in the fog lamp housing.

Since it is a facelift, the side profile of the compact sedan is exactly the same as that of the outgoing Xcent. The only change is the addition of hubcaps, replacing the full wheel covers in lower trims.

Just like the front, the new Xcent gets a redesigned rear profile as well. It gets a revamped bumper, wraparound tail lamps, broad chrome applique flanked by tail lamps, a new boot lid and a shark-fin antenna. Overall, this time the Xcent looks sharper than its predecessor.

Features

While the previous Xcent was available in four variants, the facelift gets five, with the E+ being the newly added variant. Also, the base variant gets rebadged as the E trim. To know what the different Xcent variants offer, head over to this story.

With respect to features, the new Xcent gets a host of segment-first features such as a new 7-inch AV touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which doubles up as a reversing camera, wheel air curtain and a shark-fin antenna. It also gets Alternator Management System (AMS) to reduce load on the car’s battery. Among the list of omissions is the 1GB flash memory in the infotainment system.

In terms of safety, Hyundai has added dual airbags even to Xcent’s base trims. However, ABS, which was standard earlier, has surprisingly been given a miss this time (on entry level variants).

Engine

Another key update in the new Xcent is the more powerful diesel heart; an 1186cc engine, which pumps out max power of 75PS – 3PS more than its predecessor – and max torque of 190Nm – 10Nm up from the previous 180Nm. Replacing the earlier 1120cc diesel motor, it now delivers an impressive mileage of 25.4kmpl. However, there isn’t any change in the petrol engine on offer and the Xcent facelift continues to boast the 1.2-litre petrol motor of the previous model. While the manual version of the Xcent petrol returns 20.14kmpl, the automatic registers 17.36kmpl.

The pricing of the new Hyundai Xcent begins rather aggressively compared to the previous version, thanks to the base variants. The base petrol of the Xcent facelift costs Rs 7000 less while the diesel variant too gets Rs 3000 drop in prices comparatively. However, as you move up the variants list, it keeps on increasing with the top-end SX (O) costing Rs 34,000 more for petrol and Rs 33,000 extra for the diesel over the pre-facelift Xcent.
