Toyota has shed more details on the new GD Series of turbo diesel engines which will pull the next-generation Innova and Fortuner. The engines were revealed in May at the 2015 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria. The new GD Series consist of two oil burners just the KD Series (current Innova and Fortuner features KD Series diesel engines) which it will be replacing worldwide. The new family has 2.8-liter and 2.4-liter turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder motors; known by the codes of 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV, respectively. The former engine will replace the 3.0-liter while the latter will replace the 2.5-liter diesel ones.

Toyota says that the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV oil burner is one of the most thermally efficient motors in the world with a max thermal efficiency of 44 percent. All this is a courtesy to the use of Thermo Swing Wall Insulation Technology (TSWIN) along with the reduced cooling loss due to the use of silica reinforced porous anodized aluminum (SiRPA) on the pistons.

SiRPA is a material that is easy to heat and easy to cool (cooling losses reduced by 30 percent). Both the engines use these techs and despite of the lower displacements compared to the current KD Series engines - maximum torque is improved by 25 percent and low speed torque is improved by 11 percent, while fuel economy has got a 15 percent bump. The engines are also greener than before as Toyota has used for the first time - urea Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) 6 system that reduces up to 99 percent of emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxide), one of the major air pollutant.

The next-gen Innova will get the 2.4-liter oil burner while the next-gen Fortuner is expected to offer both, similar to the ongoing ones (currently, it offers both the KD Series engine - 2.4-liter and 3.0-liter). The 2.4-liter motor musters 150 PS at 3400 rpm and a peak torque of 400 Nm in-between 1600-2000 rpm. The 2.8-liter gathers 177 PS at 3400 rpm and a max twist of 450 Nm in-between the engine speed - 1600-2400 rpm. Toyota is promising an improved low-speed pull with its in-house developed new compact variable geometry turbocharger. The 2.4-liter extracts a major chunk of its torque - 330 Nm from as low as 1200 rpm while the 2.8-liter ones do it with 370 Nm @ 1200 rpm. Speaking of the transmission -  the five-speed manual and automatics of the KD Series engines will also be replaced by six-speeders in both Innova and Fortuner.
