New-gen Maruti Suzuki Alto Spied For The First Time

The new-gen model is expected to launch in 2021

The Maruti lineup has undergone some major updates since 2018, starting with the new Swift and more recently, the Vitara Brezza facelift. Its high-selling entry-level model, the Alto, is yet to receive a similar refresh. Now, the next-generation model has been spied for the first time while testing under camouflage.

Maruti did give the Alto a minor cosmetic update in 2019 with its BS6-compliant 0.8-litre petrol engine and features to make it compliant with the latest safety standards. Since then, it has also been given a new top-spec variant with Maruti's 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, the new-gen Alto is likely to feature more significant cosmetic updates to its exterior and some additions to the feature list as well.

Since the test mule spied was completely covered in black camouflage, it is hard to discern any details of the new design but the overall proportions of the Alto are similar to the current model. Also, as a new-gen model, it would likely have updated underpinnings in terms of its chassis. It is expected to switch to Maruti's latest Heartect platform which could result in a comparatively roomier cabin. Expect a completely redesigned dashboard on the new Alto.

The new Alto will likely be powered by an improved version of the same 0.8-litre petrol engine as the current model where it produces 48PS and 69Nm while mated to a 5-speed manual. This engine is available as a CNG variant as well. Maruti could also offer the 2021 Alto with its 1.0-litre petrol engine, with an AMT option under the same moniker.

At present, the Maruti Suzuki Alto retails between Rs 2.95 lakh to Rs 4.36 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new model will likely have a similar starting price but the mid-spec variants could add a premium for the new features, while the AMT version may take the price to just over Rs 4.5 lakh. It will continue to rival the likes of the Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO. Maruti also seems to be working on a new version of the Celerio which is expected to arrive before the new Alto.
