Korean’s are joining the hatch-turned-crossover segment with the i20 Active, lets see how different it is from Elite i20 or its just another wannabe!

Hyundai will make the global debut of the i20 Active on 17th of March and the automaker has also revealed the images of the vehicle. Like all its competitors [Fiat Avventura (still the best looking vehicle in the segment), Toyota Etios Cross (Looks better than its hatch sibling), VW Cross Polo (Wannabe!)] i20 Active has gotten itself all-around body cladding and faux skid plates. Let’s see how different it is from its hatch counterpart.

Exteriors:

At the outset, Hyundai Active gets inverted Elite i20’s grille which turned out to be quite Ford like! And it also gets a silver faux bash guard. The biggest change over the Elite i20 is addition of projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs which were missing on the Elite i20 hatch but present on its European counterpart.

Active gets all-around body cladding. The side profile gets plastic appliques on the doors, roof rails and the wheel arches does not fully absorbs the wheels courtesy to 20 mm raised ride height, the i20 Active gets 190 mm of ground clearance compared to Elite’s 170 mm. At the rear, it gets updated bumper with rounded fogs mincing front fog lamps.

Interiors:

i20 Active carry forward the Elite i20’s dash but it features two color options either all black with orange hues or all black with blue palettes (blue-black dashboard is only available with silver color); Elite features dual-tone beige and black interiors.

The Active also features sporty aluminum pedals. The boot space is similar to the hatch, which is 285 litre along with the interiors space as the vehicle is dimensionally similar. Like its dashboard treatment, Active also gets sporty upholstery depending upon the dashboard, orange and blue. Apart from these, Active will adorn the same features like its hatch counterpart.

Mechanically:

Speaking of the engines, Hyundai has kept the same powertrains but said to have tweaked the engines for better power torque delivery over range. Hyundai promises six per cent improvement to the petrol motor and as much as 11 per cent for oil burner. Adding on the figures, the second gen U2 1.4 CRDI diesel generates 90 PS and 220 Nm of max torque while the 1.2 Dual VTVT petrol makes 83 PS and 114 Nm. The diesel is mated to a six-speed manual while petrol comes mated to a five-speed manual, like the hatch no automatic as of now. Claimed fuel efficiency for the petrol is 17.19 kmpl and for the diesel is 21.19 kmpl.
