Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Scores Two Stars In Global NCAP Crash Tests

The Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has crash-tested the made-in-India Hyundai Grand i10 Nios as part of its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. It managed to score two stars for both adult occupant and child occupant safety. Its rival, the Maruti Swift, too had a similar fate when it was crash-tested in 2018.
The vehicle tested was the mid-spec Sportz variant of the hatchback. While Hyundai offers the Grand i10 Nios with standard safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors, the Sportz variant gets additional safety equipment in the form of front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, rear parking camera, and speed-sensing and impact-sensing door lock/unlock. It secured 7.05 out of 17 points for adult occupants and 15 out of 49 points for child occupants.

As per the norms, the Grand i10 Nios was crash-tested at a speed of 64kmph. While the hatchback’s bodyshell integrity and footwell area were termed unstable, the Global NCAP report mentioned the head and neck protection for adult occupants to be good. However, the chest protection for the passenger was rated adequate while for the driver, it was labelled weak. The protection to the femur and knees was labelled marginal to adequate for the driver and adequate for the passenger.
The Grand i10 Nios doesn’t get ISOFIX child seat anchorages and CRS (Child Restraint System). The child seat for the three-year-old child dummy was installed facing forward with the adult seatbelt. However, it wasn’t able to prevent excessive forward movement during the impact as it offered poor protection to the head and fair protection to the chest. The 18-month-old dummy’s CRS was installed with the adult belt facing rearward. It showed good protection for the head and fair protection for the chest.
Hyundai does not offer ISOFIX child seat mounts and three-point seatbelts in all seating positions. As a result, the child occupant protection rating dropped to two stars.
