General Motors India has halted the production of the diesel variant of its recently launched Sail hatchback and sedan models, and BS III Tavera MPV. It is also stated that the production of these vehicles has stopped for almost a week due to potential emission performance of both the models. The production of the Sail sedan and hatchback stopped on June 5, while the Tavera BS III production stopped on June 6. However, the production of Tavera BS-IV and Sail series petrol models are unaffected.

P Balendran, VP, General Motors India confirmed the development and said, "As part of General Motors' stringent manufacturing and quality control processes, we have identified a potential emissions performance issue with the Chevrolet Tavera BS-III and a quality issue with the Chevrolet Sail HB & NB Diesel variant. Neither issue is safety-related. Since GM is committed to product excellence, we have temporarily suspended production of these vehicles."

The US auto maker has sold around 2,000 to 3,000 units of Sail hatch and sedan constantly, and Tavera around 1,500 to 2,000 units. More than half of the sales of Sail models accounting for diesel, but the recent diesel price hike led to increase the petrol share. The firm already informed all its dealers on the same, as this halting of production could increase the delivery period of the booked models. The company is trying hard to resolve this problem as soon as possible.
