The Fortuner will borrow engines from the Innova Crysta

One of the most anticipated launches of the year is just around the corner. Toyota will officially launch the new Fortuner in less than a week from now, on November 7. Select dealerships are already accepting bookings for the big SUV. In case you are eyeing one, here's something to make that booking decision slightly easier.

Reliable sources have confirmed the variant list for the upcoming Toyota Fortuner. The second-generation of the SUV will be offered in a total of six variants, encompassing two engines, two transmissions and two drive type options.

Engines first. As much as rumours suggested the availability of a 2.4-litre alongside the 2.8-litre diesel, that will not be the case. Unlike the Innova Crysta, the Fortuner will only get the bigger engine, which is likely to be retuned to produce 177PS of power and 450Nm of torque. The motor will come paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

The petrol powerplant will be the new 2.7-litre, four-cylinder engine that debuted with the Innova Crysta. It will be offered with two transmission options that include a 5-speed manual as well as a 6-speed automatic. The mill produces 166PS and 245Nm, which we expect to remain unchanged.

Notably, the petrol-powered Fortuner will be made available in the 4x2 guise only. The diesel variants will get Toyota's Σ4 four-wheel drive tech as well, which can be used to toggle between H2, H4 and L4 using a knob on the dash.

Summing up, the Fortuner will be made available in the following variants:

Petrol

2.7-litre, four-cylinder, 2TR-FE

  • 4x2 (Manual)
  • 4x2 (Automatic)

Diesel

2.8-litre, four-cylinder, 1GD-FTV

  • 4x2 (Manual)
  • 4x2 (Automatic)
  • 4x4 (Manual)
  • 4x4 (Automatic)

With the new iteration, prices are likely to go up. We expect prices to start around the Rs 28 lakh mark, and go well beyond Rs 30 lakh for the diesel four-wheel drive automatic. The big Toyota goes up against the aggressively priced Ford Endeavour, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer that recently received a massive price cut.
