Bharat Stage III norms implemented in India
A week ahead of the revised deadline of October 1, the Indian government has executed BS III (Bharat Stage III) emission norms all over the country. Earlier it had failed to meet the original deadline almost six months back. BPCL, IOC and HPCL, the oil companies of the public sector have invested over Rs 32,000 crore for the supply of fuel of higher grade which facilitates the new norms of emission. Since April 1, the BS IV emission norms have already been implemented in thirteen big cities of India including 4 metros – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
Jitin Prasada, minister of state for petroleum commented that they introduced the Euro-IV grade diesel and petrol in thirteen big cities from April 1 and Euro-III grade fuel was to be launched in the remaining country in phases by October 1. He also said that Euro-III diesel and petrol have already been introduced in northeastern states. The phased implementation of the norms observed the prices of petrol and diesel rise all over the country by INR 0.26 and INR 0.21 per litre. Prasada also stated that no further hike will now be observed. In April, when BS-IV-grade fuel was introduced , the prices of petrol and diesel were raised by INR 0.50 and INR 0.26 per litre.
The ultra-low-sulphur and -benzene BS III and BS IV petrol and diesel do not merely lessen the exhaust emission from vehicles but they also provide improved efficiency and power of the engines of the vehicles. The automobile industry welcomed the implementation of the BS III emission norms which have been implemented a week ahead of the schedule. The auto industry had already revised and upgraded their vehicles for meeting the new emission norms. Pawan Goenka, president, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers commented that the execution of BS III auto fuel all over the country enables the availability of much better quality fuels. This in turn will improve the air quality as there will be less emission of pollutants.
