The SUV is nearly half a tonne lighter than its predecessor

The all-new Land Rover Discovery made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September this year. Now in its 5th generation, the SUV is slated to go on sale next year and it’s now featured on Land Rover India’s website as well. While all variants of the SUV have been showcased on the site, it remains to be seen which ones will be offered in India as a launch announcement is still awaited.

The new Discovery sports a design that’s in line with what we’ve seen with the Discovery Sport. The 7-seater is based on a monocoque chassis with an aluminium intensive construction that makes it nearly 500kg lighter than its predecessor. Apart from a modern chassis, the Discovery also gets a new powerplant - the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine that makes 240PS and 500Nm of torque. Also available is the 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder TD6 diesel engine that makes 258PS of power and 600Nm of torque with both engines coming paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. While the 340PS Si6 petrol engine is also available, it’s unlikely to be offered in India.

What we will get though, is the assurance of true off-road ability. Apart from a maximum ground clearance of 283mm and a water wading depth of 900mm, the new Discovery also employs Land Rover’s Terrain Response system which adapts the 4WD system through a range of drive modes.

The feature list is expansive too with the package including LED headlights, a 10-inch ‘inControl Touch Pro’ infotainment screen paired with a 10-speaker Meridian sound system, leather upholstery and heated seats for all 3 rows. Also included is the Intelligent Seat Fold technology, through which, the second and the third row can be reconfigured using the infotainment touchscreen or even remotely using a smartphone, in addition to the switches on the C-pillar!

While a confirmed launch date is awaited, the SUV will be launched as a direct import and prices may fall into the range of Rs 1.20-1.40 Crore.
