5-door Mahindra Thar’s New Spy Shot Shows New Design Elements

The SUV will get a longer wheelbase and revised alloy-wheel design as noticeable in the new spy shot

  • New spy image suggests that it will likely get a metal or plastic hard top with removable panels.

  • Mahindra might skip on offering it with a soft top option altogether.

  • It gets a grab handle on the A-pillar inside the cabin and squared off wheel arches.

  • Will be powered by the same petrol and diesel engines as the three-door Thar but in a revised state of tune.

  • Expected to command a premium over the three-door model when it goes on sale in 2023.

Spy shots of the five-door Mahindra Thar have been doing the rounds on the internet for a while now. This time, we’ve got an image of the SUV’s test mule, revealing some new design details.

Changes Observed

In the image, we can clearly see the increased length and wheelbase, which give it the rear doors. The five-door model was also sporting a fresh set of alloy wheels with chunkier spokes and sleeker side steps. Mahindra is likely to offer the five-door Thar with a metal or plastic hard top (with removable panels) as well while skipping on a soft top option altogether.

The five-door Thar’s latest test mule also revealed squared off front and rear fenders and a grab handle on the A-pillar inside the cabin which is not present in the existing version of the Thar.

Cabin Highlights

While there are no images of the interior, we expect the five-door Thar to have a few commonalities with its short-wheelbase version, including a similar dashboard layout. We are expecting Mahindra to equip the long-wheelbase Thar with a few new features including a larger touchscreen and auto climate control.

Its increased length will open up more space for rear passengers; and since it will share underpinnings with the Scorpio N, it could also be sold in a seven-seat configuration.

A Familiar Powertrain Setup

The five-door Thar will get the same petrol and diesel engines as the existing three-door Thar, albeit tuned for a higher output. In the three-door model, the 2-litre turbo-petrol makes 150PS, and the diesel produces 130PS. Additionally, the more practical Thar could also get the option of 2WD variants unlike the current Thar, which gets 4WD as standard. Mahindra will offer the SUV with both six-speed manual and automatic gearbox options. Although we were hoping that it comes with rear disc brakes, the latest spy image denies such possibilities as it showed drum brakes.

Launch And Price

The long-wheelbase Thar will be launched sometime in 2023, while commanding a premium over the three-door model. It will compete with the upcoming five-door versions of the Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
