Nissan has dropped the first teaser of the 2017 Micra and, as expected, it looks sharp and youthful like the Sway concept!

2017 Nissan Micra

With the introduction of the sharp-looking facelifted version of the current generation hatchback in 2013, Nissan had made sure that it wants the Micra to get away from its cheeky and bulbous styling. Now, with the upcoming 2017 new-generation model, Nissan aims to break the mould entirely it has been using for the Micra ever since the hatchback’s inception in global markets. The 2017 Micra will be sharper and edgier than it ever was, and it is heading for its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Only a week is left before the global reveal of the new Micra, so though the information about it is scarce as of now, let us see what is expected out of the 2017 Micra.

Design

Nissan Sway Concept

Nissan has completely transformed the image of the Micra from a chubby little hatch to a meaner-looking head turner, based on the Sway concept from 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Declining sales of the current generation model around the globe must have forced the automaker to transform the Micra from the ground-up.

The teaser that Nissan has dropped gave us a glimpse of the 2017 Micra’s half of the front and the rear profiles. It will come with sleek swept-back projector headlamps (a first for the Micra) with daytime running lights. The latest iteration of Nissan ‘V-Motion’ will be there. On the side, the Micra is expected to feature a kink on the c-pillar (similar to recent Nissans), which makes the roof look floating. At the rear, it will have a protruding waistline with wrap-around tail lamps and will feature a spoiler.

Nissan Sway Concept

As seen in the teaser, the 2017 Micra will be available in bright colours, just like old times! Rest of the design details you can make out from the images of the Sway concept.

The new Micra is most likely to share its dashboard with the recently revealed Kicks compact SUV. As the Kicks’ cabin is the production-spec iteration of the 2017 Micra concept’s – the Sway’s – dashboard.  It is also expected that the hatchback’s dash will share a lot of elements with the compact SUV. Elements such as the digital-analog instrument cluster, infotainment systems, new flat-bottom steering wheel, among others.

Platform and Drivetrains

If reports are to be believed, the Micra will finally adopt the Renault-Nissan alliance’s lightweight modular CMF (common module family) platform. Reportedly, it will be based on the CMF-B platform. Other models using CMF platform in India – the Kwid and the redi-GO – are based on the CMF-A, while the upcoming Nissan X-Trail will be based on CMF-C/D. The result of CMF-B usage? The new Micra will be roomier than the present version, courtesy of the increased dimensions and clever packing. Mechanically, the Micra is expected to offer three and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines along with the 1.5-litre dCi diesel globally.

The 2017 Micra will likely to go on sale early next year in the European market, while its Indian introduction isn't clear as of yet. Either the Japanese automaker will launch the 2017 CMF-B based Micra or it will develop an entirely new hatchback using the current localised V-platform. Stay tuned.
