BMW 6GT Gets A New Diesel Heart Outside India

This is the same engine that powers the X1, X3, 3 Series, 3GT and the 5 Series in India

BMW now offers a new 4-cylinder diesel engine with the 6GT. Internationally, this is the fifth engine to make its way under the bonnet of the 6GT. Other engines on offer include a set of 6-cylinder diesel engines (630d and 640d), a 6-cylinder petrol engine (640i) and a 4-cylinder petrol engine (630i).

The engine in question is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel that makes 190PS of max power and 400 Nm of peak torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the same engine that powers several BMW cars in India such as the new X3, X1, 3 Series, 3GT and the 5 Series.

In India, the 6GT is only available in a single variant, the 630i, priced at Rs 60.8 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). It is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 258PS and 400Nm, coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW will soon launch the diesel-powered 6GT in India (confirmed during its launch); however, it is yet to be seen whether it will get the 6-cylinder engine or the recently introduced smaller 4-cylinder engine. We expect BMW will offer both the diesel motors with the 6GT, as is the case with the 5 series. Whereas the 4-cylinder engine is likely to become the new base variant, the larger 6-cylinder engine could power the top-spec M Sport variant (currently unavailable).

Starting from April 2018, BMW has started offering BSVI-compliant engines with all its petrol cars in the country. But as far as shifting to BSVI technology on its diesel-powered cars is concerned, BMW will wait for the availability of BSVI-grade diesel fuel throughout the nation, which is set for April 2020.
