The third-gen Hyundai i20 has dropped the ‘Elite’ moniker and will be launching in November first week

Update (05/11/2020):Hyundai has launched the third-gen i20 with prices beginning from Rs 6.79 lakh (ex-showroom). Read more about it here.

  • New teaser suggests the production of the third-gen i20 is underway.

  • The upcoming Hyundai i20 will retain nearly all design cues of the Euro-spec model.

  • It will feature a sunroof, LED illumination, machine-cut alloys, 10.25-inch touchscreen.

  • Expansive engine options are likely to be similar to the Venue. Expect 1.2-litre NA and 1.0-litre turbo petrol with a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

  • Prices likely to increase slightly and begin at the Rs 6 lakh mark.

Hyundai has officially teased the upcoming third-generation i20 ahead of its launch early next month. The teaser reveals several features, design quirks as well as the interior (half baked).

The Hyundai teaser sequences a mix of a camouflaged i20 along with fleeting glimpses of the front and rear profile of the uncovered car. The front half of the i20 gets a glossy black hexagonal front grille similar to the Verna Turbo. It’s easy to make out the use of LEDs for the headlamps, DRLs and tail lamps.

The new i20’s side profile reveals dual-tone, machine-finished alloy wheels which are likely to be 16-inch units. Despite the camouflage, the shoulder line can be seen running the length of the car right until the end. The slim outside rearview mirror is finished in a dual tone and gets turn indicators as well.

The top view reveals a sunroof and shark fin antenna. The only other car in its segment with a sunroof is the Honda Jazz. At the rear, the LED tail lamps are connected by a chrome strip, along with i20 and Asta wordmark.

Hyundai has also let us have a look at the half-baked interior of the car. The unfurnished model here gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a big digital instrument cluster from the Verna Turbo, well-merged AC vents, and provision for auto climate control. We also expect a Creta-like multi-function steering wheel, neon inserts, and wireless charger. Safety is likely to be taken care of by six airbags, rear parking camera, and ESC (electronic stability control).

Under the hood, the i20 is likely to come with more choices than any other offering in the segment. It could get a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (83PS/113Nm) paired to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT, and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (120PS/173Nm) paired with a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 1.5-litre diesel (100PS/240Nm) with a 6-speed manual transmission is also on the cards.

The upcoming i20 will take on the Honda Jazz, Maruti Baleno, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz. Its prices are likely to start around Rs 6 lakh and breach the Rs 10 lakh mark in the fully loaded trims.
