Maruti WagonR AMT Caught Testing
The popularity of automated manual transmission is slowly increasing and this is reflected by the handsome sales number of Maruti Celerio. The company was the first one to introduce a low cost automatic and that is paying off pretty well. However, it is long known that to fulfill its dreams for launching more automatic cars, Maruti is mulling to bring the AMT to its other budget line-up of vehicles. And the most recent one is the WagonR/Stingray AMT that has been spied in near-production version. Although, there is no word about the launch date, but it is expected to take place in a couple of months.
The car is identical to the current WagonR/Stingray, except for the AMT lever and the badging of course. The automatic transmission or the Auto Gear Shift, as Maruti calls it, will be offered with the Vxi trim like the Celerio AMT. Apart from these, the instrument cluster will be getting the gear shift indicator like Celerio AMT. The cars will be powered by the same 1.0-litre inline 3, producing 67 bhp of power and 90 Nm of torque.
AMTs have been doing quite brilliantly these days, whether it is Celerio, TUV or the Nano, all have been able to garner good chunk of sales with their automatic versions. With WagonR coming in the AMT version, how can Tata sit quite; the automaker is all set to launch its upcoming Tata Zica in this version to maximise its reach among the masses.
