Maruti had earlier announced that all its hatchbacks will feature a CNG variant as well

  • Maruti S-Presso CNG test mule seen featuring an emission testing apparatus.

  • Expect the 1.0-litre petrol engine to feel watered down in the S-Presso CNG.

  • Maruti should only offer a 5-speed manual on S-Presso CNG.

  • Boot space will reduce from the current 270 litres.

  • Maruti S-Presso CNG could command a premium of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 over the corresponding petrol variant.

  • Maruti could bring the S-Presso CNG to showrooms in the early half of 2020.

Maruti’s recently launched entry-level cross-hatchback, the S-Presso, could soon be running on CNG fuel, according to the latest set of spy shots. The uncamouflaged mule was spotted fitted with an emission testing contraption that acts as a connector for the tailpipe and the CNG cylinder that is placed in the boot.

The Maruti S-Presso is powered by a BS6-compliant 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 67PS of power and 90Nm of torque. Expect a slight drop in these figures as the Alto K10 CNG that features the same engine but in BS4 form produces 60PS of power and 78Nm of torque.

The Maruti Alto K10’s petrol-CNG variant is only available with a 5-speed manual and we expect the same gearbox setup in the S-Presso as well, no AMT. The claimed fuel efficiency of the 1.0-litre petrol unit paired with CNG in the Alto is 32.96km/kg and you can expect the S-Presso to come up with a similar number as well.

Expect the S-Presso’s boot size to shrink from the standard 270 litres with the addition of the CNG cylinder. S-Presso’s sibling, the Alto K10 has a 60-litre water-equivalent capacity.

There’s no word on the launch of Maruti S-Presso CNG but expect it to surface in showrooms by early 2020. Prices are expected to be around Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 more than the corresponding petrol-only variant of the hatchback.
