Maruti Suzuki sales in March 2011

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 1,21,952 units, growing 28.2 per cent over March 2010 (95,123 units). This included 11,528 units of exports. In the A2 segment, sales grew 43.3 per cent with 78,460 units while in A3 segment the sales were up at 13,910 units, growing 33.1 per cent, in March 2011. In C segment, the Company recorded a growth of 32.6 per cent, touching 14,416 units. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 12,71,005 vehicles during fiscal 2010-11, a growth of 24.8 per cent over fiscal 2010-11 (10,18,365 units).During the fiscal, the Company recorded a growth of 30.1 per cent in the domestic market and sold 11,32,739 units. The Company had sold 8,70,790 units in the domestic market during last fiscal.

Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales grew across segments during 2010-11. The Company continued to lead the A2 segment, selling 8,08,552 units and marking a growth of 27.7 per cent. In the A3 segment, sales were up at 1,31,272 units, reflecting a growth of 32.2 per cent. In the C segment, sales grew by 58.5 per cent touching 1,60,626 units. A number of new models, upgrades and alternate fuel option variants launched in the fiscal helped Maruti Suzuki to register the robust growth.

Maruti Suzuki exported 1,38,266 units in the fiscal. This included 43 per cent of exports to European countries. In 2009-10, exports to Europe were 77 per cent of total exports. The removal of scrappage scheme resulted in a slowdown in European markets. In 2010-11, the Company explored new destinations like Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos and Brunei. Algeria, Chile, Indonesia, South Africa, Hong Kong and Australia were other prominent non-European markets. This focus resulted in increased contribution from non Europe markets to 57 per cent, as against 23 per cent during fiscal 2009-10

In 2010-11 Maruti Suzuki completed the manufacture of cumulative 1 crore (10 million) vehicles. The first car was rolled out in December 1983. Of the 10 million, five million units have come in the last six years.

During the year, Maruti Suzuki launched the new WagonR in April 2010 followed by Alto K10 with K-series engine in August 2010. In August 2010, the Company introduced CNG variants for its five models Alto, Eeco, SX4, WagonR and Estilo. In February 2011 Maruti Suzuki introduced the new Suzuki Kizashi, India’s first luxury sports sedan and also launched SX4 with a Super Turbo Diesel engine.

Maruti Suzuki plans to build two new plants of 2.5 lakh units capacity each, at Manesar. With this fresh investment, Maruti Suzuki will be able to produce over 17 lakh units annually, by 2012-13. The total medium term investment by the Company stands at Rs 6,000 crores, inclusive of investment in these two new plants at Manesar.

During the year, the Company continued to scale up production through a number of productivity enhancing initiatives. These initiatives enabled the Company to produce an additional 2 lakh vehicles from the existing capacity and thus respond suitably to market demand.
