Kia’s Sonet is expected to raise the bar even higher with a few segment-first features

Update (07/08/2020): Kia has officially unveiled the Sonet. You can read more about it here.

  • The Sonet is expected to be launched around September 2020.

  • It will be offered in GT and Tech Line trims like the Seltos.

  • Kia will offer it with the same engine options as the Hyundai Venue.

  • It is expected to get an air purifier, 360-degree camera, and front parking sensors.

  • Kia is expected to price the Sonet from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • Prime rivals include the Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300.

The sub-4m SUV space is growing in popularity with each passing year. Kia will soon be entering the segment with the Sonet and will reveal the SUV tomorrow. Much is already known about the Sonet thanks to various spy shots and teaser sketches but it will be our first look at the final production-spec model.

In terms of design, the Sonet will look quite similar to the concept version showcased at Auto Expo 2020. The sub-4m SUV will get LED headlamps with LED DRLs and the signature tiger-nose grille as seen on other Kia models. At the rear, it features connected tail lamps and faux exhaust tips on either side of the bumper.

Inside, the Sonet will get connected screens as seen on the Seltos with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The instrument cluster has been teased with a digital speed readout and spied with an LCD multi-information display as well. It is also expected to feature UVO connected car tech, an air purifier, a segment-first 360-degree camera, and sunroof. On the safety front, expect it to get front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, and up to six airbags.

Kia will offer the Soner with three engine options: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, all of which are available with the Hyundai Venue as well. While the 1.2-litre petrol motor will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox, Kia will offer the turbo-petrol engine with three gearbox options: 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT (clutch pedal-less manual), and 7-speed DCT. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is expected to get a 6-speed manual and even a 6-speed automatic from the Seltos.

The Sonet is expected to go on sale around September 2020. It will take on the likes of  the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, and Ford EcoSport. The upcoming Renault Kiger, Toyota Urban Cruiser and Nissan Magnite will also take on the Kia Sonet. While unofficial pre-launch bookings are already underway, Kia is likely to open official bookings soon after the reveal.
