With the MU-X, Isuzu will now have a competent product to take on the ever-growing body-on-frame premium SUV segment in India.

The successor of the MU-7 (now discontinued), the MU-X, will finally be launched next month in India on May 11, 2017. The MU-X was already on roads in neighbouring markets when Isuzu entered the Indian market with MU-7 in December 2013.

There were hardly any takers for the dated MU-7 SUV, and Isuzu also had a wafer-thin dealer network back then. But things are different now. The Japanese automaker’s lifestyle pickup, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross (on which the MU-X is based), has been a popular choice among buyers in its segment ever since its launch almost a year ago. Also, Isuzu’s dealership network has grown considerably over the years.

The upcoming MU-X will go up against the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and its alter ego the Chevrolet Trailblazer (it is essentially an MU-X with a different face and engine). Out of these, the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour are doing really well in the Indian market. The MU-X will be locally manufactured at Isuzu’s Sri City plant, where the D-Max V-Cross is also manufactured and is expected to undercut its rivals in terms of pricing. Its variant options are expected to be limited initially, and prices are likely to fall in the vicinity of Rs 25 lakh.
