India witnesses a rise in overall vehicle dependability
According to a recent Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) done by J.D. Power for the Asia Pacific region, the vehicle dependability has improved significantly in year 2010 as against in the year 2009. The report further elaborates that in year 2010, the Overall vehicle dependability stood at 269 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) on an average which accounted for an improvement of 21 PP100 from 2009.
In this study, the overall dependability in the industry is based on the total number of problems reported per 100 vehicle. While a higher score indicates the higher rate of problem (and lower quality of the vehicle in the long term), a lower score indicates a lower rate of problems. In this study, a vehicle is ranked in seven segments of the market which includes compact car segment, premium-compact car segment, entry-level mid-size car segment, entry level premium mid size segment, MUV/MPV segment and SUV segment.
According to Mr Mohit Arora, executive director at J.D. Power Asia Pacific, Singapore, the vehicles that are 30 to 42 months old, now have fewer problems as compared to previous years. He added that this is positive news for consumers who are looking to buy a used vehicle as well as those who own relatively newer models and plan to hold on to them for a while.
The study provides a very useful information on long-term quality of the vehicle as it measures 169 problem symptoms in nine categories including engine, vehicle exterior, driving experience, heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), features, controls and displays, audio and entertainment, seats, vehicle interior and transmission.
