Volkswagen shelved its plans of turning the Taigun concept into a reality. In exchange, the German automaker showcased the T-Cross Breeze concept at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. We loved the outlandish styling of the concept and wish a lot of the design elements showcased eventually find their way into the production-spec version.

Speculative renderings of a Volkswagen compact crossover – blending traits of the T-Cross and the Tiguan SUV – have emerged, giving us a glimpse of the production-spec version. The sleek headlamps, large honeycomb grille, and the crisp, taut lines make for a well-balanced, clean design. It has trademark SUV touches too, such as the faux skidplate and a healthy dose of black cladding. If the final version looks similar to the sketches, we have to admit, it will be amongst the best designed compact SUVs in the market.

Based on the same MQB platform as the Polo, the compact SUV is expected to go on sale in 2018. Reports suggest that the SUV will be shorter compared to the Audi Q2, which means it will duck under the 4-metre mark. While there is no official word on the powertrains, it is highly likely that Volkswagen will include a TSi and a TDi motor. We reckon VW will opt for the 1.0-litre TSi motor that churns out 110PS of power and 175Nm of torque, as seen on the T-Cross concept.

Just like Volkswagen, Hyundai plans on bringing the Carlino compact SUV to take on the likes of the Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. Lest we forget, Tata will be taking the wraps off the Nexon as well. With every manufacturer wanting a piece of the sub 4-metre SUV pie, it will be interesting to see how the segment shapes up in the coming years.
