Can’t decide which of the two SUVs you should you go for? We help you find out

Launched at Rs 6.5 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India), the Venue enters a hotly contested sub-4m SUV segment dominated by the likes of the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300. While we have already compared the specs and features of the Venue with its rivals, let’s see where it stands in terms of value for money, starting with the Tata Nexon.

Before diving into the details, let’s take a look at the mechanicals of the two sub-4m SUVs.

  • The Venue, however, has a longer wheelbase.
  • Both the SUVs have an identical boot space of 350 litres.

  • The Nexon’s bigger 1.5-litre unit produces more power and torque than the Venue’s 1.4-litre unit.
  • When it comes to fuel economy, the Venue takes the lead.
  • Where the Venue is available with a 6-speed MT only, the Nexon gets an option of 6-speed AMT as well.

  • Where the Venue is available with two petrol engines to choose from, the Nexon gets only one.
  • The Venue’s 1.2-litre engine is the least powerful unit here. The 1.0-litre unit, on the other hand, is the most powerful engine. It also has the highest torque output.
  • Both the SUVs are available with a manual as well as an automatic transmission to choose from. However, while the Nexon comes with an AMT unit, the Venue gets a dual-clutch automatic transmission which is regarded as a more advanced tech as it is likely to shift gears at a quicker pace compared to an AMT.

Variants Comparison: We will compare only the similarly priced variants (price difference ~Rs 50,000) of the two sub-4m SUVs.

Hyundai Venue E vs Tata Nexon XE

Hyundai Venue E

Rs 6.5 lakh

Tata Nexon XE

Rs 6.48 lakh

Difference

Rs 2,000 (Venue is more expensive)

Common Features:

Safety: Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, driver and co-passenger seat belt reminder and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Exterior: Halogen headlamps and body coloured bumpers.

Interior: Fabric seat upholstery.

Comfort and Convenience: Manual AC, front power windows, tilt adjustable steering and adjustable front seat headrest.

What Hyundai Venue E offers over Tata Nexon XE:

Speed sensing door locks, day/night IRVM, body coloured door handles and wheel covers.

What Tata Nexon XE offers over Hyundai Venue E:

Outside mirror with turn indicators, foldable rear seat and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: There’s hardly any difference between the Venue and the Nexon in their respective base variants. If you’re to pick one, you can go for the Nexon if you often load large stuff in the boot as it gets foldable rear seats. The Venue’s day/night IRVM can come in handy while driving at night. If you’re on the road most of the time after sunset, you can consider the Venue as well.

Hyundai Venue S (1.2L) vs Tata Nexon XM

Hyundai Venue S (1.2L)

Rs 7.2 lakh

Tata Nexon XM

Rs 7.23 lakh

Difference

Rs 3,000 (Nexon is more expensive)

Common Features (over previous variants)

Safety: Speed sensing door locks.

Exterior: Wheel covers and external antenna.

Infotainment: Both the SUVs get a 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth and steering mounted controls. However, the one in the Tata is from Harman Kardon, which should have an edge over the system in the Venue.

Comfort and Convenience: Rear power windows, remote central locking and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

What Hyundai Venue S(1.2) offers over Tata Nexon XM

Body coloured door handles and ORVMs, day/night IRVM, rear AC vents and cooled glove box.

What Tata Nexon XM offers over the Hyundai Venue (1.2L) S

Foldable rear seat, multiple driving modes and ORVMs with turn indicators.

Verdict:

Again, there’s nothing substantial that separates the Venue and the Nexon here. With Tata not offering body-coloured door handles and ORVMs on the Nexon XM, it would look more stripped out than the Venue. The Venue also gets a few more features, and that is why we’d suggest you to go for the Hyundai.

Hyundai Venue S (1.0L) vs Tata Nexon XZ

Hyundai Venue S (1.0L)

Rs 8.21 lakh

Tata Nexon XZ

Rs 8.31 lakh

Difference

Rs 10,000 (Nexon is more expensive)

Common features (over previous variants)

Exterior: Body coloured ORVMs and door handles.

Comfort and Convenience: Rear AC vents, day/night IRVM and cooled glove box.

Projector headlamps, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse parking camera, auto climate control, electrically foldable ORVMs with turn indicators, shark fin antenna, height adjustable driver seat, foldable rear seats and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: The Venue’s 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is about a lakh rupees more expensive than the 1.2-litre unit. As a result, while the Venue has gotten more expensive, its feature list is still the same. The Nexon is our clear pick here. For a premium of just Rs 10,000, it gets a lot more features compared to the Venue including a touchscreen infotainment system and auto AC.

Hyundai Venue SX vs Tata Nexon XZ+

Hyundai Venue SX

Rs 9.54 lakh

Tata Nexon XZ+

Rs 9.14 lakh

Difference

Rs 40,000 (Venue is more expensive)

Comfort and Convenience: Electrically foldable ORVMs, reverse parking camera, auto climate control, height adjustable driver seat and adjustable rear headrest.

Infotainment: Where the Nexon comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the Venue gets an 8-inch unit. However, both the units get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

What Venue SX offers over Tata Nexon XZ+

Projector fog lamps, auto headlamps, electric sunroof and cruise control

What Tata Nexon XZ+ Offers over Venue SX:

60:40 split rear seats, push button start and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: The Venue is the more expensive car here, but it totally justifies the premium over the Nexon with the additional equipment it gets. So, if you can spend as much as Rs 9.5 lakh, we’d suggest you pick the Venue.

Petrol-automatic variants

Hyundai Venue S (1.0L) DCT vs Tata Nexon XZA+

What Hyundai Venue E offers over Tata Nexon XE:

Speed sensing door locks, day/night IRVM, body coloured door handles and wheel covers.

What Tata Nexon XE offers over Hyundai Venue E:

Outside mirror with turn indicators, foldable rear seat and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: The base-spec Nexon is our pick here simply because it offers better value for money. It does miss out on some features that the Venue gets but those don’t justify the incremental value that you’ll have to pay for the Venue.

Hyundai Venue S vs Tata Nexon XT

Hyundai Venue S

Rs 8.45 lakh

Tata Nexon XT

Rs 8.70 lakh

Difference

Rs 25,000 (Nexon is more expensive)

Common Features (over previous variants)

Safety: Speed sensing door locks.

What Tata Nexon XM offers over the Hyundai Venue

I think the base spec variant of Venue offers a 5 speed MT whereas TATA nexon comes with 6 speed MT as standard & I think the Nexon diesel is more fun to drive car & spare parts will be lot cheaper.
