Honda Reveals 2022 Civic Prototype And It Looks All Grown Up

• The new Civic sedan model will serve as a design inspiration for all Civic body styles.

• Powertrain options have been kept under wraps but a performance-focused Type-R is confirmed.

• India might not get this new generation Civic until much later.

The Civic has been one of the longest running name plates around the world and now Honda has us getting ready for its 11th generation model. The Japanese carmaker revealed a prototype version of the sedan online and we are a little surprised at how grown up it looks.

Honda’s Civic has always had a cheerful outlook to it, with its bubbly design complemented by some funky elements and gorgeous body styles (the Civic can be had as a hatchback or a sedan in international markets). The new Civic, however, looks quite mature and athletic. The prototype was revealed in the sedan format and it featured a very traditional three-box design. It is almost like Honda has looked over to the Germans for some design inspiration.

The Civic continues to be a looker, but its bubbly personality seems to have been replaced by something meaner. Honda says that this design will be continued over to all the different versions of the Civic, namely the sedan, hatchback, sportier Si variants and the performance-focused Type R.

Honda has revealed only a sketch of the new Civic’s interior. It’s all black with a dashboard that has a symmetrical and minimalistic design and it looks thoroughly modern and upscale. The 9.0-inch touchscreen is a floating element on top of the dashboard, and a new digital driver’s instrument cluster. If we had to pick the highlight of the cabin, it would be the air vents tucked neatly inside the mesh pattern running across the dashboard, concealing them beautifully.

The engine and transmission options for the 11th generation Civic have been kept under wraps for now, as it is a MY2022 model and Honda could still be finalising how it’ll announce the options. We however expect a hybrid powertrain to be made available with it, in keeping with the times.

As far as an India launch is concerned, the Civic enjoys a steadfast following in our country but Honda only manages to sell the sedan here in limited numbers. That is why Honda has brought only two generations of the Civic to India. And just like last time, the Japanese carmaker could choose to skip this 11th generation Civic for the Indian market. But then, that would be so disappointing, won’t it?
