The flamboyant Tata Hexa aims at the big guns – the Mahindra XUV5OO and the Toyota Innova Crysta – in the utility segment.

Tata has finally launched the much anticipated Hexa, which was introduced in its production-spec guise a couple of months ago in the Indian market, today. It is a completely reworked Aria, and has now become the flagship product in Tata’s product lineup. The Hexa goes up against two of the well established and popular heavyweights – the Mahindra XUV5OO and the Toyota Innova Crysta. It certainly takes a lot to compete with such rivals. Read on to find out if Tata has packed the Hexa with enough substance to take on the XUV5OO and the Innova Crysta in our variant wise feature comparison.

Standard Features

Starting with the standard ones, both the Hexa and the XUV5OO offer almost similar features, while the Innova Crysta comes with an additional driver knee airbag along with brake assist and reverse parking sensors. But the Innova lacks disc brakes on its rear wheels.

Base Variants

The base variants of the Hexa and the XUV5OO are pretty well loaded compared to the Innova Crysta’s. The Innova doesn't even come with an audio system, while the Hexa also offers navigation support in its Harman powered ConnectNext unit. It also has the maximum number of speakers not just on the XE, but in all of its variants. Also, it is only the Hexa that features LED tail lamps.

All the three cars offer touch-based infotainment system from the second variant itself. The XUV5OO and the Crysta come with a bigger 7-inch unit, while the Hexa offers a 5-inch one. However, as far as sound systems on these cars are concerned, the Hexa excels with its eight-speaker system (four speakers and tweeters). Tata also offers segment-first multiple driving modes in the Hexa along with an important safety addition of heated outside rearview mirrors (the Safari Storme also features heated ORVMs). The expensive Innova, on the other hand, gets push-button engine start-stop, segment-first LED headlamps, front and rear auto climate control, rear parking camera, and others in its VX variant.

The middle variants of the XUV5OO, W6/W6 AT, get niceties such as cruise control, auto static bending headlamps and wipers, ESP (electronic stability control) and others.

The W8 starts at Rs 15.53 lakh for the manual version, while the AWD manual and FWD auto are priced at Rs 16.41 lakh and 16.61 lakh, respectively (all ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Top-end Variants

The range-topping versions of all the three cars come loaded to the brim with additional goodies, while carrying over the existing ones. Features such as leather upholstery, reverse parking camera, alloy wheels, and others are common. The Mahindra additionally offers sunroof, power adjustable driver’s seat, push-button engine start-stop over the Tata. While the Hexa XT comes with class-leading features such as driving modes, 10-speaker JBL sound system and 19-inch alloy wheels. The highlight of the Innova Crysta’s top-end is the maximum number of airbags (seven airbags) on offer.
