Mahindra Thar Expert Review

Introduction

The Thar’s recipe is simple - a robust chassis, a potent motor and four-wheel drive. The SUV isn’t something one buys to get to office and back. It serves a very specific purpose - having fun! The most affordable 4x4 in the country recently got a facelift. Does it manage to retain the Thar’s essence? Let’s find out!

Pros
  • Good to have creature comforts - air-conditioning, music system, 12V charger now available.
  • 2.5-litre CRDe motor + 4x4 = go-anywhere! Among the most potent off-roaders in the country.
Cons
  • Nervous on-tarmac manners. Choppy ride and fidgety steering means you are better off under 100kmph.
  • Quality of plastics in the interiors leave a lot to be desired.
  • Facelift has been given only to the high end CRDe trim. DI versions remains to be same with outdated styling.

Stand Out Features

  • Only one in its class to feature a mechanical locking rear-differential.

  • Shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive with a dedicated low-ratio makes getting out of sticky situations easier.

CarDekho Verdict

The Thar is named after a mountain goat - and it is exactly that. In case you want a cool Jeep to drive to office and back, look towards something more modern like a sub 4-metre compact SUV such as the Maruti Vitara Brezza or the Ford EcoSport.

"There’s nothing more value-for-money than the Mahindra Thar."

But, if you need nothing more than a four-wheel drive toy to help you muck about on the weekends, there’s nothing more value-for-money than the Mahindra Thar.
