Maruti Vitara Brezza 1.0-litre BoosterJet to Be Launched This Diwali

A report* has confirmed that India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, will be introducing a 1-litre BoosterJet variant of its revered Vitara Brezza compact SUV. The report also claims that the information has been derived from a source that is closely affiliated to Maruti Suzuki.

The Brezza was recently launched with a price tag of Rs. 6.99 lakhs for the base variant, and the line-up introduced comprised only of diesel models. Maruti then confirmed in a statement that it will introduce petrol variants at a later stage.

The 1.2-litre petrol unit which powers most Maruti cars is likely to be inadequate to take on the duties of powering this compact SUV; and with only 83 BHP at its disposal, Maruti’s only other alternative will be to incorporate the 1.4-litre motor which undertakes petrol duties in its cars like the Ciaz.

However, the incorporation of this unit will result in consumers losing out on the benefits of the sub-4 metre compact SUV tax bracket. This makes the BoosterJet motor with its 110PS of power output the ideal contender to take on the petrol motor duties in the Brezza.

The report also states that the 1-litre BoosterJet engine will initially only be imported to India for incorporation in the Baleno RS – the hot premium hatchback that was showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo last month – and the Brezza compact SUV. The reason behind importing the BoosterJet mill is that, in order to justify the localisation of this motor, the automaker is required to produce 100,000 units per month. So, as the BoosterJet unit will be imported for the foreseeable future, expect Maruti to charge a substantial premium over the cost of the car, which will compensate for import duties. This will also mean that the cars that eventually make their way to the customers might be quite costly.
