  • T-Roc launched in March 2020 but the 1,000 units allocated for the year were sold out by September.

  • Volkswagen is restocking the T-Roc for 2021 but exact numbers are unknown.

  • Tiguan to make a comeback in its facelifted avatar, likely with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.

  • Both SUVs could be offered either as CBUs or locally assembled offerings.

  • They would rival the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, and Skoda Karoq.

Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce a slew of SUVs into the Indian market in 2021. Before the launch of its first-ever compact SUV, the Taigun, in India, the German carmaker has planned to restock the T-Roc and reintroduce the Tiguan models between April and June 2021.

The T-Roc was launched here in March 2020 but only 1,000 units were allocated for the Indian market which were all sold out by September. A fresh batch of this premium compact SUV is on its way to India but the specific number of units is unknown. It will likely continue to be offered in a single variant with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, mated to a 7-speed DSG. The T-Roc features comforts such as dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a panoramic sunroof. In 2020, it was priced at Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) as a CBU import and the 2021 model might attract a slight premium.

Meanwhile, the regular Tiguan is set to return to the Indian market after being discontinued in April 2020. It was offered with a single 2.0-litre TDi diesel engine, mated to a 7-speed DSG that produced 143PS of power and 340Nm of torque. In its place, we’ve had the 7-seater Tiguan Allspace which is a stretched-out version of the same. It is offered with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit which puts out 190PS/320Nm. Volkswagen unveiled the facelifted Tiguan in mid-2020 and it is now going to be offered in India alongside the Allspace. The Tiguan is expected to get the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine from the T-Roc. While the previous model started from Rs 28.07 lakh, the new petrol-only model could be priced similarly while the Allspace is priced at Rs 33.13 lakh (ex-showroom India) as a CBU offering.

Both the Tiguan and T-Roc SUVs could be offered as locally-assembled offerings or as CBU imports. In the case of the former, the prices could be lower to more attractive rates. These models will compete against the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, and Skoda Karoq.
