With the growing competition in the compact SUV segment, Volkswagen and Tata Motors has unveiled the Taigun and Nexon concept at the recently concluded Auto Expo'14. Both looks futuristic and is expected to be introduced in the country by 2015. Volkswagen India has been very selective with its new cars and didn't launched any new product last year. On the other hand, carmakers are regularly launching products in competitive sub-4 metre segment. With the new Taigun compact SUV, the German carmaker is surely aiming to explore the increasing popularity of small SUVs.

On the contrary, Tata Motors introduced a series of new cars last year, however, it still misses out on compact SUV segment. With the new Tata Nexon, the company is aiming to mark its presence in the segment. Meanwhile, Tata has also unveiled the Zest compact sedan and Bolt hatchback, which will be launched by the mid-2014. The production version of Nexon SUV is likely to hit the market by 2015-16. This compact car will compete against the likes of Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, Volkswagen Taigun and others.

Tata Nexon

The Taigun, unveiled at Auto Expo, looks closer to its production. If all goes well, we expect it to make its official debut in India by early 2015. Based on Volkswagen's new small family platform structure (PQ12), which also underpins the new Up!, the Volkswagen Taigun takes some of its interior styling from Polo and others and looks perfect car for the Indian market. Volkswagen will have a tough task ahead and it will have to work smart to keep its cost down. Moreover, the company is likely to use more local components to manufacture this vehicle and Volkswagen could also cut down the feature list. This compact SUV measures less than 4 metre in length, however with a wheelbase of 2.47 metre it has a good cabin space to carry five adults comfortably.

Interestingly, Tata Nexon and Volkswagen Taigun has received an excellent response from visitors and critics. This will surely boost up the confidence of the manufacturers. It will be interesting to see when these cars will make their road presence in India. So, stay tuned to CarDekho to get more updates on the same.
