Tata Gravitas Spotted Testing With BS6 Emission Kit

The 7-seater version of the Harrier will debut with a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine

• Tata has confirmed that the SUV will be launched in February.

Tata Motors revealed the name of the 7-seater version of the Harrier just a day ago and now, it has been spied undergoing emission testing for the first time. The Gravitas will be launched with a BS6-compliant diesel engine which will also find its way under the bonnet of the Harrier. Apart from a couple of extra seats, the Tata Gravitas could also bring a set of additional features over the Harrier it is based on.

These spy shots reveal an extended rear overhang and Harrier-like alloy wheels which are different from the Buzzard that we saw at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The emission testing is for the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder Fiat-sourced diesel engine that is already on offer in the Harrier.

Tata is expected to offer the engine with a higher state of tune in the BS6 era. Currently, it produces 140PS in the Harrier. The BS6 engine, on the other hand, is expected to churn out170PS while the torque figure should remain unchanged at 350Nm. Overall, we can expect similar output figures as the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, which is powered by the same BS6 engine.

The flagship Tata is expected to get a 6-speed automatic transmission from Hyundai in addition to the existing 6-speed manual gearbox. Tata has been working on a BS6-compliant petrol engine for the Harrier as well and it's quite possible for it to find itself inside the Gravitas' engine bay. This powertrain could get a dual-clutch automatic transmission as well.

While we couldn't get a peek at the test mule's interior, the Gravitas is expected to carry forward the Harrier's equipment list as is. This means that it will get the Harrier's semi-digital instrument cluster, 8.8-inch touchscreen and six airbags. In addition to this, Tata could also offer the Gravitas with a panoramic sunroof and larger 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels (at least on top variant).

Tata has confirmed that the Gravitas will go on sale in February. This could mean that Tata could use the Auto Expo as a launchpad for the SUV. The Tata Gravitas is expected to be priced Rs 15 lakh onwards and take on the upcoming MG Hector 7-seater as well as the next-gen Mahindra XUV500.
