Shell concept lubricant achieves 6.5% fuel economy benefit
Shell and Gordon Murray Desgin (GMD) has developed a unique and innovative concept powertrain lubricant which offers 6.5 per cent of improvement in fuel economy. It is a huge change from 2.5 per cent presently available. Engineers from Shell are working towards building what is currently the industry specifications to develop an ultra low viscosity 0W-10 motor, which is expected to break the barrier. The trend is to manufacture fuel efficient and low emission cars and better lubricant can help to meet the new demand easily.
Selda Gunsel, the Vice President Lubricants and B2B Products Technology at Shell Lubricants said that mixing the low viscosity oil to enhance the fuel efficiency is simple but the challenge lies to balance it along with the engine protection and
acceptable oil drain intervals. He also stated that there are various products which have struck a great balance like Shell Helix Ultra but these companies have to work under the present industry norms. It is time to develop lubricant technology which goes beyond the present industry norms and specifications to increase the cars efficiency for future.
At the concept level, it showcases a big development in the lubricant technology as it will be used in cars for future. However, he also ushered that efficiency is one part and reducing CO2 emission is a different part but looking at the pressure and incentives for the car producers to lessen the CO2 can be increasingly important. It is because that as the friction in the engine reduces, less fuel is consumed and it results in reducing the CO2.
Professor Gordon Murray, Gordon Murray Design’s CEO and Technical Director, said that the developers have challenged all the given aspect of car design to make T.25 and the eco friendly positive iStream production process. Lubricant plays a very important role as it helps in enhancing cars fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. He later said that Shell engineers with the developers are working towards the new ultralow viscosity concept oil.
By using the 0W-10 Shell prototype motor oil, the T.25 was able to achieve 96 mpg in RAC Future Car Challenge award winning most economic hatchback passenger internal combustion mill in the car. It has proven excellent with lightweight cars, efficient small powertrain and unique lubricants are blended together.
Roger Moulding, Vice-President Global Key Accounts at Shell Lubricants, said that Shell is globally the biggest lubricant and fuel providers. The company is trying its best to help in reducing emissions. The company is calling the strategic response to challenge the sustainable transport. “Smarter mobility” that includes range of innovations in three key components such as smarter use, smarter infrastructure and smarter products. Aiming on rendering smarter lubricants for buyers, this new product is work and efforts of the engineers to make a smart product for new genre cars.
