Update (05/11/2020):Hyundai has launched the third-gen i20 with prices beginning from Rs 6.79 lakh (ex-showroom). Read more about it here.

  • The third-gen Elite i20 to launch in the first week of November 2020.

  • It gets a near identical exterior design as the international-spec model, save for the alloy wheels.

  • To get the Venue’s engines, including the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit.

  • Hyundai to offer the new iMT clutchless manual gearbox with the turbo-petrol engine.

  • The second-gen model may continue to remain on sale in limited variants.

The third-gen Hyundai Elite i20 has started reaching dealerships ahead of its expected launch in the first week of November 2020. A select few have even begun accepting unofficial pre-launch bookings for the premium hatchback for Rs 25,000.

The second-gen model has been on sale for more than six years since its launch in August 2014. It features sharp European styling, but the upcoming third-gen model has taken things a notch up. The new one is even sharper than before with a tauter stance. The front fascia gets a large grille as well as sleek projector headlamps and fog lamps. The rear packs triangular connected tail lamps.

The interior features a minimalistic layout with the highlight being a semi-digital instrument cluster, a flat-bottom steering, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a Bose sound system, and even a sunroof! Hyundai is expected to offer the hatchback with its latest BlueLink connected car tech for various functions including remote start/stop and cabin pre-cool. Apart from these bits, expect features such as multiple airbags, wireless charging, air purifier and climate control.

Hyundai will offer the new Elite i20 with the same engines as the Venue which includes a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit (120PS/172Nm) as well. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is rated at 83PS and 114Nm while the 1.5-litre diesel develops 100PS and 240Nm. Hyundai will offer the 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed MT while the diesel engine will come with a 6-speed MT. The turbo-petrol unit will be the only engine to offer a 6-speed MT, 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission) clutchless manual, and 7-speed DCT options. To see how it will fare against its rivals in terms of engines, head here.

We expect Hyundai to price the third-gen Elite i20 from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will renew its competition with the likes of the Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz and VW Polo. With the arrival of the new model, Hyundai might still keep the current-gen model on sale, albeit in limited variants as seen in the case of the Grand i10 and Grand i10 Nios.
