More on Honda's lightweight 1.6 L i-DTEC engine for Civic diesel

Honda’s absence in diesel car segment is felt by Indian consumers more than anybody else. Out of the blue, the Japanese car manufacturer has now announced their 1.6 L diesel engine which is to debut under the Honda Civic’s hood. The charm of the new Honda 1.6 Liter iDTEC diesel powertrain is the lightweight virtue, which is much in demand of late. The higher fuel efficiency automatically comes into the equation when an extremely weight conscious 170 kg diesel motor is in question.

The new 1.6 L diesel powertrain developed by Honda Motors is quite capable to show a 120 Bhp peak power performance and an outstanding 300 Nm torque figures. The 300 Nm torque achieved at mere 2000 rpm has got many spell-bounded already. The 1.6 l diesel engine is basically a toned down version of the 2.2 L that drives the Honda CR-V and Honda Accord models in the European markets. The only pity is the new engine will not be available in the country until 2013. Another smaller capacity engine of 1.4 L i-DTEC turbo diesel engine is also on the cards with Honda Brio and Honda Jazz on mind.

However, the new 1.6 L i-DTEC engine has fuelled a fresh set of speculations that this is the move from Honda India to target the Volkswagen’s expertise in diesel engine technology. Now, confirming all the rumours, comes a statement straight from the horse’s mouth.  None other than an insider from Honda Motors, Junji Yamano, an engineer by profession had said that they wish the Volkswagen to spend the nights without a wink of sleep fearing the upcoming competition.Volkswagen sedans like Volkswagen Vento to Volkswagen Jetta are the strongest rivals of the Honda cars in terms of class and performance alike. The presence of diesel powertrain in Volkswagen cars has always pinched the Japanese car manufacturer the most.
