The upcoming MG EV is currently under development and is expected to debut in 2022

  • MG is working on a new electric vehicle that will be priced under Rs 20 lakh.

  • It could offer a driving range of up to 500 kilometres.

  • Expected to launch in 2022.

  • It will rival the Tata Nexon EV, Altroz EV, and the upcoming Mahindra XUV300 electric.

The electric vehicle space in India is gradually growing with a few EVs planned for this year. In the affordable price range, you have three electric SUVs: Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, and Hyundai Kona. The Nexon is the best selling of all, primarily because it is the most affordable in a 15 lakh budget.

Mahindra is expected to launch the electric XUV300 later this year. Recent reports suggest MG is also bringing in a new electric vehicle. Speaking to ET Auto, Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, said, “We are working on finalising the details of the battery assembly facility this year, which is likely to go on stream next year. Work is also on for launching an electric vehicle priced lower than Rs 20 lakh by the end of next year (2022).”

MG’s ZS EV is its sole electric offering priced from Rs 20.88 lakh to Rs 23.58 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The ZS EV gets a 44.5kWh battery pack and an electric motor that produces 143PS and 353Nm of peak torque. It offers a range of 340 kilometres on a single charge.

MG is also planning to introduce a bigger battery pack option for the ZS EV, which could offer a range of around 500 kilometres. It will be rated at 73kWh, a lot bigger than the current one. However, there is still no confirmation on when it will be available.

Tata sold over 2,800 units of the Nexon EV in 2020, which is a decent figure. MG, on the other hand, sold nearly 1,100 units of the ZS EV last year and plans to sell 2,500 units this year. By next year, we will have more affordable EV options. The addition of a sub-20 lakh EV could widen MG’s audience and increase its market share in the EV space.
