With more than 8000 units sold in June 2019, the Hyundai Venue is breathing down the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza’s neck

  • Vitara Brezza registered a MoM (month-on-month) growth of more than 1 per cent, compared to the Venue’s 24 per cent .

  • Rest of the sub-4m SUVs registered negative MoM growth last month.

  • XUV300 has a market share of more than 15 per cent.

  • Tata continues to sell more than 4000 units of Nexon every month.

  • EcoSport commands more than 10 per cent market share for the month.

The sub-4 metre SUV segment continues to flourish as more and more options are added to the segment. What is interesting to note is that, despite the Vitara Brezza, the demand for all other SUVs in the segment has not dropped by much since new players came into the segment.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza: It might still be at the top of the table but the subcompact SUV from Maruti is hanging on to that spot by its fingernails. Compared to May 2019, sales of the Vitara Brezza grew by a little over 1 per cent; however, the Vitara Brezza’s lead at the top has been cut short to just over a 100 units. In fact, it is way below than its average monthly sales figures of the past 6 months.

Hyundai Venue: The Venue has lit up the segment with its blockbuster performance, selling more than 7000 units a month since it went on sale. The Hyundai SUV has quickly closed the gap on the Vitara Brezza and next month’s sales figures could be enough to crown it the new champion of the segment.

Mahindra XUV300: The XUV300 has carved out a spot for itself in the table. Mahindra is managing to sell around 5000 units of the SUV every month and the XUV300 commands more than 15 per cent of the market share -- in a segment where every carmaker present has a solid product.

Tata Nexon: While the XUV300’s presence in the segment may have pushed the Nexon down the order, it has hardly managed to make a dent in the latter’s sales. Tata is still managing to sell more than 4000 units of the Nexon month after month.Ford EcoSport: As with the others, the trend remains the same with the EcoSport. Ford has been selling consistent number of units of the EcoSport, despite the segment seeing new and popular entries like the Venue and XUV300.

Mahindra TUV300: The TUV300 is the only ladder-frame chassis SUV in the segment and Mahindra continues to sell upward of 1000 units every month. It had a market share of almost 4 per cent in June 2019.

Total: The segment saw an overall growth of almost 2 per cent from May to June. Total units sold in June 2019 were upwards of 31,000 units.

Maruti has been very very lethargic in introducing 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre petrol engine for vitara brezza and s cross models. Now competition is very intense and Maruti cannot be complacent.
