Maruti considers Maharashtra for new facility

According to the latest reports, Maruti India is looking at other possibilities to set up the proposed manufacturing plant. The auto major is checking the lands in Maharashtra to shift the operations to the new plant slowly to avoid further hindrances in production. After the long strike which ended on last Friday, the company is now aggressively seeking options including Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Apparently an insider from Maharashtra government has leaked that Maruti Suzuki India is already done with the preliminary round of assessments for the proposed plant, where the company concentrates on the required land to set up the necessary infrastructure.

The land under consideration is said to be near Khed, 40 km away from Pune. With both Maharashtra and Gujarat Governments competing for the MSI’s proposed plant, Maharashtra Government is believed to offer a decent incentive package to lure Maruti India to set up their new unit in Maharashtra. The company already has the proposal from the Gujarat Government. Once MSI is ready with the package from the Maharashtra Government, it will be able to take a decision on the matter. However, there are reports to show that MSI is considering other states as well. Setting up a new plant in Maharashtra has its own advantages. With the new plant in the Western part of the country, the auto major will be able to serve the country better with its plants spread out in the Northern part of the country.

This will also reduce the shipping charges for the company from new facility to the other parts of the country with its strategic location. MSI is all set with Gujarat proposal, though requires the final nod of approval from the MSI board. The recent 14 day strike at the MSI plants came to an end on 21st of this month and the operations had begun from the 22nd after the management partially accepting to the workers’ demands. Apart from agreeing to reinstate 64 suspended or dismissed workers and 1,200 contract workers when the demand arises, the company has proposed to form two committees to sort out all the labour issues in future. The ‘Labour Welfare committee’ and the ‘Grievance Redressal committee’ will be formed comprising of the labour and the workers representatives.
