We reported last week that American automaker Jeep’s new C-SUV is all set to make its way onto Indian streets soon. The SUV will be manufactured out of Fiat’s Ranjangaon plant and there is news that a smaller SUV based on the company’s Renegade utility vehicle will also join Jeep’s line-up for India soon. This move comes as a result of FCA’s aggressive strategy for global expansion.

Two of Jeep’s most popular models from its India line-up were recently showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo, namely, the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. A more powerful version of the Cherokee – named SRT – was also showcased at the motor show last month.

Jeep confirms that the C-SUV will be launched in India, but there has been no official word yet on the India launch of the upcoming compact SUV codenamed ‘Jeep MG’. Prototypes of this compact SUV have been spotted testing on Indian soil on multiple occasions. The new compact SUV has been designed keeping emerging markets in mind but, all in all, it will be a global product.

The SUV finds its foundation in the Italian automaker’s X6H platform, which is an updated version of FCA’s 326 platform. This makes the underpinnings of the car stronger and lighter as compared to its predecessor, which will make the new SUV considerably safer, faster and maybe even more fuel efficient.

The automaker has not disclosed the engine options for the upcoming model, but it is expected that FCA’s MultiJet engines will be fitted in the Jeep MG. This move will help in the overall localisation of the car, which will help the company offer the new SUV at a competitive price. The pricing of the Jeep MG is expected to undercut the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster. It is also expected that the new SUV will be offered in an all-wheel drive version that should cater to the off-roading junkies as well as in two-wheel drive.
