Mitsubishi has started testing the next-generation 2016 Pajero Sport, very first spy shorts are pouring in from Australia. It will be a comprehensive update inside-out including mechanical upgrades. The current generation Pajero Sport entered India in 2012 and it was recently updated (automatic transmission added with changes inside-out) but this model globally debuted in 2008 and its over 7 years old. If reports are to believed, the new Pajero will make its debut this year, reportedly in Thailand. Talking about the Indian launch, it can be expected next year.

Adding more on the next-gen Pajero Sport, since Pajero’s next-gen pickup counterpart - Triton/L200 is already introduced by the Japanese automaker last year, it hints how will the new SUV look like. On the design aspect, like the Triton, Pajero will have a narrow swept back headlamps with daytime-running LEDs and beefy bumpers. While the side profile seems to be similar to that on-going SUV but the test mule seems to be long and features a prominent character waistline, just like the new Triton/L200. Moreover, interiors will also see a makeover along with addition of new features.

Mechanically, it is expected that the 2016 Pajero will get the 2015 Titon’s new 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine instead of the current 2.5-liter unit, which is also used by the out-going Triton/L200. Despite being 100 cc less, the new motor is more powerful and efficient. It generates 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque compared to current 2.5-litres’ 176 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Transmission options will be carry forwarded from the current gen. The new Pajero in India will rival with the 2015 Ford Endeavour, new Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Santa-Fe and Chevrolet Trailblazer.
