Chevrolet celebrates World Environment Day in India

General Motors India today announced a line-up of activities planned across all its centres in the country to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5, 2011. This day holds global recognition to spread awareness about environmental issues and empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development. Towards this, GM India has organized several initiatives at its plants in Halol (Gujarat) and Talegaon, Pune (Maharashtra), GMTCI in Bangalore (Karnataka) and GMI’s corporate office (Gurgaon, Haryana) and a Free Pollution Check Campaign across the nation to engage with its stakeholders.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. P Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India, said, “World Environment Day is an important day to understand and educate environmental issues that our planet faces today. GM India is deeply committed to being an agent of change to reduce carbon footprint and adopt green technology, and has taken several steps to attain this objective. Be it LPG and CNG variants of our products, the EV technology we possess or the development of Jatropha for bio-diesel, GM India constantly strives towards safeguarding the environment and presenting consumers with options to be able to adopt alternate mobility solutions.”

To mark this day, GM India will hold Free Pollution Check Campaigns at all its workshops and issue a Free Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, if the vehicle meets the necessary emission requirements. The additional activities to be conducted at the workshops include plantation of saplings at dealerships and slogan competition on environment. The customers will also be given free plant sapling, literature on maintenance of vehicles and tips on fuel efficient driving.

In order to engage its internal audience and spread the “Go Green” message, several activities have been organized by GM India. At GMI’s Technical Centre (GMTCI), plantation drives will be conducted and a guest lecture will be organized on how to manage household waste and convert it to useful high-quality compost and help you achieve the goal of becoming a green citizen. In addition, GM India has collaborated with General Electric and two NGOs for a forestation project that will involve environment preservation through conservation of natural resources of forests and supporting the villages in the Western and Eastern Ghats.

In its plants in Halol and Talegaon, GMI will undertake tree plantation drives in the premises, showcase of movies on environment conservation and quiz, banner, slogan and poster-making competitions for all staff members. Additionally, in Halol plant, GMI officials will engage with school and college students through different competitions like elocution competition and seminar on environment to spread the “Go Green” message.

Given GM India’s commitment to the environment and alternate mobility solutions, the company had already introduced CNG and LPG versions of its products to promote greener technology to its consumers. The company also has ongoing partnership agreements with US Department of Energy and India’s Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) to develop jatropha as a biofuel energy crop, reiterating the company’s commitment to green technology and alternative fuels.
