2019 Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Launched nearly four years ago, it’s about time Maruti Suzuki gave its premium hatchback, the Baleno, some much-needed updates. Set to be launched in Q1 (Jan-March) 2019, an undisguised test mule of the updated hatchback has been spotted recently. The spy shots reveal the refreshed front fascia of the hatchback and we must say the front bumper now looks more sculpted and sporty compared to the outgoing model.

Other changes include a sleeker grille and a relatively rounded lower profile. The headlamps have been carried forward, so it continues to get LED DRLs. We do hope that Maruti opts for LED headlamps in place of the bi-xenon units on the outgoing model. After all, cars like the Ciaz and the Swift-Dzire duo now get LED headlamps. We also expect LED fog lamps, like the Ciaz facelift.

Other stylistic changes expected in the 2019 Baleno are redesigned rear bumper, tail lamps with new graphics and machine-finished alloy wheels. In terms of features, the updated Baleno could gain rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, standard rear parking sensors and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front co-passenger.

Currently, the Baleno is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel unit. While both the engines come paired to a standard 5-speed manual transmission, the petrol engine is offered with an optional CVT automatic as well. Its powertrain options are likely to remain as is. The more powerful Baleno RS is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine coupled to a 5-speed manual. It remains to be seen if the Baleno RS also gets the cosmetic updates or if Maruti decides to pull the plug on it.

The outgoing version of the Baleno is priced between Rs 5.38 lakh - Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Baleno RS, on the other hand, retails at Rs 8.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The updated version of the Baleno will continue to rival the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo along with the upcoming Tata 45X-based hatchback
