Uttar Pradesh Becomes First State To Pilot An AI-based Road Safety Project

In a move to improve road safety, the Uttar Pradesh government has received a green flag to implement an AI-based pilot project from the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH). To enforce the trial project, the Uttar Pradesh Government has set aside Rs 10 crore in its fiscal budget for 2025-26. That being said, it will be implemented at zero cost by ITI Limited, a public sector enterprise, in collaboration with mLogica, to handle the big data analytics.
The first prototype of the test, which is scheduled for 6 weeks, will access data from accidents, vehicles, weather, road characteristics and driver profiles to prepare data-rich AI models.

Benefits Of The Project
This data will then be used to identify causes for road mishaps and introduce safety norms and policies to make a difference to the real-world situations.
This model will also provide essential real-time data to the government for making relevant policies related to road safety. As the data will be provided by AI, it can also help in reducing future accidents by predicting them before they happen.
When the pilot project comes to an end, a detailed report of the findings will be submitted to the Central Government which will provide insights about road safety so that this data can also improve national road safety measures.
This pilot marks a big shift in how Indian states can use technology to tackle road accidents, which remains one of the country’s deadliest issues. And with UP leading the way, this AI-powered approach could hopefully soon become a national standard for safer roads and improved driving conditions.
