Following Volkswagen India’s decision to suspend sales of the manual variants of the Vento diesel, Skoda Auto India has also voluntarily stopped retail of the Rapid diesel variants with manual transmission for a temporary period. The halt in sales is with effect from April 1.

This discretionary pause has been announced because these two are essentially the same cars with different badges, and shares most of their mechanical bits. As Skoda says, this is only a precautionary step that falls in line with that of Volkswagen. Also, this hasn’t happened due to any directive from the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), neither has the sedan failed any COP (Conformity of Production) test.

Other Rapid variants have not been affected by this decision, and the variants such as the 1.6 MPI petrol engine and the 1.5 TDI diesel engine with the automatic transmission will continue to be on sale.

Volkswagen on Friday recalled 3,877 diesel Ventos due to inconsistent carbon monoxide emissions. These emissions were found to surpass the threshold limits of the Indian norms in the Conformity of Production (COP) tests done by the ARAI. However, Skoda hasn’t taken the VW way and no recall has been announced. Anyway, India-spec Skodas haven’t been found to emit more than the allowed amount of carbon monoxide.
