The latest version of the Maruti compact hatchback will feature major design updates

  • Second-gen Celerio spotted again but still under camouflage.

  • We get to see the front, rear and side profile of this high-spec test mule.

  • Its body shape is similar to the current model but it looks bigger than before with new front and rear end styling.

  • New Celerio to get the same 1.0-litre petrol engine as the current model but it could also get the option of the 1.2-litre petrol engine.

  • Maruti is expected to launch the new-gen Celerio in early-2021.

The next generation of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio has been spied testing multiple times but this is the first time we’ve seen it parked. This allowed the spotter to take snaps from all angles but the test mule is still heavily camouflaged. It’s likely to be launched in early-2021.

While the new Celerio seems boxier than the current model, it is noticeably larger. It is expected to be based on the Heartect platform, same as the Wagon R, which should allow for a more spacious cabin. The front end of the new Celerio is more upright and will likely feature a redesigned front fascia while the placement of the fog lamps seems unchanged. It will also get a new arrangement inside the headlamps.

The rear end has also been worked on with all-new tail lamps and a modern tailgate design. It still gets an integrated spoiler but the high-mounted stop lamp is now positioned behind the rear windscreen, rather than on the spoiler. The model spied seems to be a high-spec variant with its dark-grey stylised wheels.

There are no pictures of the interior of this top-spec test mule which is expected to feature Maruti’s 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, a previous sighting of another test mule gave us a peek at the new interior which gets a redesigned dashboard. But since it was a lower variant, it didn’t have any steering-mounted controls while the instrument cluster seemed the same as the current model.

Maruti is expected to offer the new-gen Celerio with the same 1.0-litre petrol engine (68PS/90Nm) as the current model with the choice of a 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT. It could also get the option of the 1.2-litre petrol engine (83PS/113Nm) with the same transmission options.

The next-gen Celerio could come at a small premium over the current model priced between Rs 4.41 lakh and Rs 5.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will continue to be positioned between the S-Presso and the Wagon R  with a launch likely in early-2021. The Celerio still rivals the likes of the Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago and Datsun Go. Maruti is expected to introduce the Celerio X version of the new model as well.
