If you are planning to buy one of Maruti’s MPVs, should you head to its Arena showrooms or Nexa outlets? Here’s what we think

Maruti Suzuki has launched the premium iteration of the Ertiga called the XL6 at prices ranging from Rs 9.8 lakh to Rs 11.46 lakh (ex-showroom India). The petrol-only MPV is Rs 70,000 more expensive than the corresponding variant of the Ertiga. That said, it offers various premium bits, including the option of an automatic transmission, right from the entry-level variant. So which of the two MPVs makes sense for you? Let’s find out.

  • Comparing the corresponding variants reveals that the price premium of the XL6 over the Ertiga ranges between Rs 70,000 to Rs 84,000.

  • The Ertiga is also available in more affordable variants if you can’t stretch your budget for the XL6.

Exteriors

  • On the outside, the XL6 receives rugged cladding all around the car along with a blacked-out treatment for the front fascia. It gets LED multi-reflector headlamps with LED DRLs and fog lamps instead of the halogen units on the Ertiga.

  • The side profile of the XL6 gets roof rails and blacked-out ORVMs. It also features 15-inch alloy wheels finished in glossy black over the Ertiga. If you're wondering if the XL6 has a higher ground clearance than the Ertiga, then the answer is no.

  • The rear end of the two look identical at first glance. However, the XL6 gets a redesigned bumper with faux skid plates and a vertical reflector. Moreover, the panel above the licence plate is finished in gloss black unlike the Ertiga. There are minor changes in the length and width of the XL6 from the donor car which can be attributed to some of these cosmetic upgrades.

  • The colour palette of both MPVs are identical. However, the XL6 does get additional options such as Nexa Blue and Brave Khaki. That said, it is not available with the Ertiga’s Auburn Red option.

Interiors

  • On the inside, the Maruti Suzuki XL6 gets an all-black dashboard compared to dual-tone one on the Ertiga. The overall layout is identical though.

  • The XL6 also gets black leather upholstery, whereas the Ertiga offers lighter beige fabric upholstery.

  • Instead of the seven-seater setup in the Ertiga, the XL6 can only accommodate six due to a relatively comfortable captain seat setup in the second row.

Features

  • Both the MPVs are equally equipped in terms of basic features. However, the XL6 gets cruise control over the Ertiga, which should be a boon on the highway.

  • Shared features include a 7-inch touchscreen (new SmartPlay Studio on the XL6) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering mounted audio controls, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs (XL6 gets key sync feature that auto folds and unfolds upon lock/unlock), rear defogger, and more.

  • Safety equipment on both MPVs comprises of dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear parking sensors and camera, and ESP with hill start assist (only AT).

 Engine Options

  • Both the Ertiga and XL6 share the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre petrol engine (105PS/138Nm) that gets two transmission options - a 5-speed manual and 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The top-spec Ertiga is not available with the automatic option whereas both variants of the XL6 gets this option.

  • The Ertiga is available with a 1.5-litre diesel engine which is missing in the newer Maruti offering.

Which One To Pick?

If you are looking for a more premium version of the Ertiga petrol and don’t mind shelling a bit more for fancy feature additions, the XL6 is the one for you. It also makes sense if you are looking for a better back seat experience thanks to the captain seats. Those looking to buy the top-spec automatic Ertiga can also look at the XL6.

But if you plan on buying a diesel MPV, onthen the Ertiga is your sole choice between the two. Those who want a more affordable people mover should also tilt in favour of the Ertiga. Buyers looking for an automatic MPV between these two will find the Ertiga VXi AT a significantly more affordable (less by Rs 1.61 lakh) option than the XL6 Zeta AT.
