Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. will be launching an all-new 800 cc diesel engine by the end of this current year. This new 800cc diesel engine, smallest in the market till date, will be doing its duty under the hoods of the recently-launched Celerio hatch and the company’s forth-coming Light Commercial Vehicles. As of now, Chevrolet Beat's three-cylinder 936 cc engine is the smallest diesel unit in the market. The engine is being developed at the company's Gurgaon plant and is expected to be a two-cylinder unit, which would deliver fuel-efficiency of around 30 kmpl.

As on date, Maruti Suzuki Celerio comes with a single engine option- a 3 cylinder K Series 1.0 liter petrol unit producing 67 PS of max. power and peak torque of 90 Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual and the recent-sensation Automated Manual Transmission. After the arrival of diesel engine option, a jump in the demand for Celerio is expected, though its still not confirmed, that the diesel version will receive an AMT gearbox or not.

Recently, in a list of 15 most fuel-efficient cars, Maruti Suzuki cars stood nowhere, while Honda City was awarded as the most fuel-efficient car. The second spot was occupied by another Honda, the Amaze compact sedan, that too uses the same diesel engine. Powered by a common 'Earth Dreams' 100ps-1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, City's claimed mileage is 26 kmpl, while the Amaze claims a fuel efficiency of 25.8 kmpl, certified by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Dzire compact sedan being the most efficient product in Maruti's portfolio with 23.4 kmpl, stood at 19th position. Even after the existence of these facts, Maruti Suzuki's current line-up still continue to outnumber most of its competitors, sidelining all their fuel-efficiency claims.

“The numbers claimed by the companies were achieved in ideal road-test conditions and may vary in the real world bumper-to-bumper traffic. Fuel-efficiency is a factor that alone can swing purchase decisions in India. It is critical for the success of products and companies have been investing huge amounts in new technologies to deliver more distance to every litre of fuel.” stated the report.
