Maruti strike reaches other automobile plants
Supporting the cause of the on-strike workers of Maruti India’s Manesar plant, workers of other automobile manufacturing plants nearby have decided to go on fast on June 17 followed by no-work for two hours on June 20. Meanwhile, with the strike on, Maruti has suffered a loss of around 11,400 units since June 4 and a total loss of around Rs 340 crore. The production of Maruti Swift, Maruti Swift Dzire, Maruti A-Star and Maruti Sx4 has been severely hit due to the strike. It is believed that the strike could delay the launch of Maruti R3 as well.

In order to show their solidarity with the workers of the Manesar plant, different automobile unions of various manufacturing units in Gurgaon, Rewari, Dharuhera and Manesar told press on Wednesday that they will appear for work on June 17 but will observe fast. In addition to it, the workers would halt production for two hours on June 20 as well if the demands of the workers at the Manesar plant are not accepted by Maruti. The workers also demand reinstatement of all the 11 workers sacked by Maruti lately.

It is expected that the Manesar workers will be joined by over 20,000 workers in and around the industrial towns-Gurgaon, Rewari and Dharuhera. Over 2000 workers are already on strike at the Maruti’s Manesar plant. It is expected that the Manesar plant strike is going to hit production at other major automobile companies adjoining Manesar. Notably, several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Hero Honda and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have their manufacturing plants in the area.

It is said that things were going to settle after Maruti agreed to recognize the new union at Manesar. But the workers union continued their strike as Maruti had set a condition barring the new union from any affiliations with unions outside Maruti. On the other hand Maruti officials are constantly in dialogue with the workers to resolve the issue and restore production of Maruti cars manufactured at the Manesar plant.
