JLR eyes to set up assembly plants in India and China

The mighty Ratan Tata’s Tata Motors India dealership with the British auto makers Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has some achievements to speak of. Jaguar and Land Rover are two British brands which had decided to roll into the Indian market with Tata Motors as its exclusive importer for a wide range of both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles some time back. Now, Mr. Ratan Tata has informed the media that Jaguar Land Rover is heading to increase its assembly operations in India and China as well very soon.

The Assembly operations for Land Rover Freelander 2 SUV had already started in May, 2011 after opening its first assembly plant in Pune and discussions for the other products of the Land Rover are going on according to Mr. Tata, as told to the shareholders of Tata Motors in its Annual Report for 2010-2011. The completely knocked down (CKD) kits had been shipped from its Halewood Manufacturing Unit in Liverpool, UK to the Pune plant for assembling the Land Rover Freelander SUV.

As for the China Assembly plant, Mr. Tata had commented that Jaguar Land Rover is mulling over various options for assembling selected products from its wide variety of models. He had also informed that JLR and Tata Motors are aiming to have a joint engine development programme and also have sights to set up the manufacturing plant for the same in both India and UK. He said that both the auto makers intend to have an extensive development plans for different varieties of cars, off-road vehicles and commercial vehicles in both petrol and diesel variants.

Mr. Ratan Tata of Tata Sons and Tata Motors had also expressed his hope that both the firms are looking forward to developing fuel efficient electric and hybrid vehicles that might cause low air-pollution. Let us hope for the same too for our own good!
