India-bound Volkswagen T-Cross Spied With Minimal Camouflage
The India-spec T-Cross is expected to be larger than the model that has been spied
The Volkswagen T-Cross is expected to make its international debut by the end of this year and the compact SUV was recently teased with light camouflage. However, latest spy images of the Creta-rival wearing minimal camouflage have now surfaced.
Up front, the T-Cross has a squarish profile. It features a horizontally slated hexagonal grille flanked by wedge-shaped headlamps. To hide some design elements VW has used black tape, like between the headlamps the front grille. Black tape is also visible around the fog lamps housing. The T-Cross Concept’s fog lamp housing had a square design. VW might carry this design forward.
At the back, the T-Cross gets large LED tail lamps but there is a black sticker covering the central portion between the two tail lamps. The sticker could be covering an LED element connecting the tail lamps, which was revealed in the official teaser images. In order to keep its upcoming SUV’s design private, the carmaker has used tape to mimic the exhaust tips on the rear bumper.
The side profile of the SUV looks clean. It features a sharp shoulder line running across the length along with chrome-lined windows.
As the spy shots are limited to the exterior of the car, we will have to wait till the official unveiling to know what the T-Cross will feature on the inside. It is expected to borrow its cabin from the sixth-gen Polo, the hatchback it is based on.
The India-spec T-Cross is expected to be larger than the International model so it is likely to feature slightly reworked aesthetics to accommodate bigger dimensions. While the European-spec car will be based on the Polo hatchback, the India-spec T-Cross is likely to be based on the Virtus (Polo sedan). Both the Polo Virtus are based on the same platform but the Virtus has a larger wheelbase.
The India-spec T-Cross will be underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform, the India-specific version of Volkswagen’s MQB-A0 platform. Volkswagen plans to achieve up to 90 per cent localisation with the T-Cross in order to keep the prices of the SUV competitive. When launched in 2020 in India, the T-Cross will take on likes of the Hyundai Creta, Maruti S-Cross, Renault Captur and upcoming SUVs such as the Nissan Kicks, second-gen Renault Duster, Jeep Renegade and Kia SP concept-based SUV.
